RAND PAUL OPPOSED TO PAY EQUALITY

Presidential hopeful Rand Paul is opposed to pay equality. He has been quite clear and consistent in support of his position. As I have pointed out in earlier blogs the Gender Gap may not be closed until 2058 at the current pace of closure. Should Mr. Paul become president that estimate will have to be revised and an issue in its second century may reach a third century before it is rectified. The facts continue to pour in on this issue spotlighting the seriousness and unfairness of the current situation. CNN notes that “women are twice as likely as men to retire into poverty”. Mr. Paul has been vocal about closing the gap between wealthy and poor but seems to ignore that position when it comes the Gender Gap. Equal pay would cut poverty in half for families with a working woman. The New York Times cited Republican obstructionism as worsening the pay gap.

A COMMUNIST PLOT

Mr. Paul made the following quote in reference to the Gender Gap: ” Pay equality for women is a Communist idea from the days of Soviet Russia”. That statement is frightening by itself. However, Mr. Paul compounded the problem when he compared the Paycheck Fairness Act to the Soviet Politburo dictating wages and the price of goods. When he voted against the Paycheck Fairness Act he stated “the wage landscape is better when the marketplace determines what wages are”. In other words, he sees no problem with the current Gender Gap. He clarified this position when he declared the women in his family were doing just fine.

PAUL NOT A SUPPORTER OF WOMEN

Mr. Paul is clearly not a supporter of women. In addition to voting against the Paycheck Fairness Act he also voted against the Violence Against Women Act. The act would have provided protection and resources to victims of domestic violence. In support of his position Mr. Paul stated he believed the issue should be addressed at the state level.

PAUL DOES NOT UNDERSTAND THE ISSUE OF GENDER GAP

Mr. Paul does not understand the issue of Gender Gap. The Equal Pay Act of 1963 prohibits the offering of different wages to different employees based on their sex. He has failed to address the serious gap of $.82 for women for every $1.00 earned by men. His Communist references show a lack of understanding of the law equally frightening as his Communist quote. Wages are set by employers not the government. What would Mr. Paul’s response be if an ad stated: lawyers needed; $77,000 for women and $100,000 for men. Would he react to this as a Communist idea? What if an ad stated: workers wanted; $700 per week for people from Tennessee; $1000 per week for everyone else?

APRIL 14: EQUAL PAY DAY

What Mr. Paul appears to miss in this battle is the independent role of the Judiciary in this country. Women are simply looking for equal rights under the law in the year 2015. And people like Mr. Paul still refuse to step up in support. Today Mr. Paul said in regard to the Gender Gap: “The market makes just decisions.” Rand Paul and Queen Victoria seem cut from the same cloth when it comes to the Gender Gap. He makes 125 years seem like…today.
